Elements, part 7

2:07 AM

The Farnsworth rings nine times before an exhausted and bedraggled Pete Lattimer picks up.

"Pete. What took you so long?"

Pete just gives Artie a Look.

"Listen," says Artie before Pete can respond verbally. "Jeffrey Weaver? I think that that guy needs a second look."

"Myka's taking a look at him right now. Over dry turkey, mushy vegetables and tapioca pudding."

"Okay, you're still in the hospital?"

"I got pushed out of the side of a steel truck. I'm recuperating."

"Yeah, well, recuperate later, because while Myka's keeping Weaver busy, I'm gonna need you to toss his apartment."

"Why steal his stuff from himself? Is Weaver our guy?"

Artie lets out a dry laugh. "Well, tell me what you find out, and I will let you know."

2:28 AM

"Hey, you know who was in business with Radburn years ago?"

"The other guy who wanted the sculpture?" guesses Pete.

"That's right. Jeffery Weaver's father. Both those guys tried to push really hard at that time to sell all four of his sculptures."

"Yeah, but what do they do?"

"I dunno. I guess, y'know, something happens when you put all four sculptures together. My best guess? Something--"

"--bad," finishes Pete.

"Bad," agrees Artie. "You find anything at Weaver's yet?"

"Nah, I dunno, this place is clean. If he's the guy with the coat, he probably..." Pete trails off, staring at something outside the Farnsworth's field of view. "...oh, come on."

"What?"

"It's probably nothing. I'll call you back."

"Nononowaitwait--" Too late. The transmission's already cut off. Crap. Artie's lost too many rookie Agents to 'probably nothing.' He hopes it really is nothing this time.

2:46 AM

Yeah, it totally wasn't 'nothing.' Turns out Pete had stumbled upon the entrance to a secret room that's filled to the brim with Walter Burley's artwork, writings, and personal belongings. Which doesn't necessarily mean that Weaver is the one behind the sculpture thefts, but it's more than a little incriminating. At the very least, it gives them a lot more information from which to work.

"Burley was married to a Lenape woman," says Pete, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "The sculptures are some kind of key to a sacred underground cave..."

Artie leans forward. "To a sacred what?"

"A cave. Uh, it says that it contains 'four offerings to the spirits of Creation.' Somehow he hid the directions to the cave in the sculptures."

"So... those four sculptures, they're a map? If you put the four sculptures together, maybe they tell you where this cave is?"

"Yeah, but how, Artie? I mean, we're missing something..."

2:55 AM

"'The truth is in the dawn.'" Pete sighs. "'The truth is in the dawn.' I don't know what that means, but it's written all over Burley's notes."

"What's written?"

"'Dawn.'" Pete turns the Farnsworth so Artie can see the notes for himself. "I mean, I don't know... creation, maybe? 'Tony Orlando and'-?"

"Creation... or destruction," muses Artie.

"Yeah." Pete runs his hands over his face. "Look, Artie, how much of this stuff do we really believe?"

"Well, enough that if he's looking for this cave, it's better that we find it first."

"I would agree with that," says a male voice that Artie doesn't recognize. "Your partner's already got me covered."

Ah. that would be Jeffrey Weaver, unless Artie misses his guess.

Pete frowns at the new entries. "Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do."

"Where's the coat?" asks Myka.

"Gilbert Radburn beat me to it. Same way he's been trying to find the cave."

"What cave?"

"Underground. Sacred. Check it out." Pete pushes the notes toward his partner.

"We have to stop him," says Weaver. "Like you said, there are some things that should not be out in the world."

"Yeah, but what about that big guy who works for the two of you?"

"LaSalle is Lenape. He wants to save the cave too. He's been my eyes and ears at Radburn's digs. He hasn't checked in either. I think something's happened."

Myka frowns. "So we have to find this cave before Radburn does?

"If he's got all four sculptures? He could be there now."

"We've got all of Burley's notes right here..."

"That hasn't helped me solve it yet."

Artie clears his throat and speaks up. "True, Mr. Weaver. But... you're not me. And right now we need to find the location of that cave before Radburn does..."

5:17 AM

Two more hours in, and they've hit a wall. "So Burley stopped taking notes when he got close to finding the cave," says Myka.

Pete nods. "It's like he realized the stories were true and stopped writing anything down."

Artie paces restlessly back and forth between his desk and the bulletin board. "Well, y'know, I think it may be enough, because I found all these old maps and I--"
