Artie's Office - balcony
Warehouse 13
South Dakota
Leena's sitting on the balcony outside Artie's office, sipping an iced tea and inspecting the chessboard set out there. Artie arrives just in time to see her reach for the Black king's rook. "Nononononodon'ttouchthat!" he yelps. "Inthemiddleofagame!"
Leena pulls her hand back. "With whom?"
"Myself," says Artie. "White's been backed into a corner by Black. I'm waiting for a 'Eureka' moment to save White's butt."
"Been waiting a while?" Leena inquires.
"...three months," he admits, a little grumpily. "Why?"
"Oh, Claudia was looking it over. Noticed you were in a bit of a pickle."
"She noticed I was in a bit of a pickle," Artie mutters smarmily. "Where is the little demon?"
"Oh, she's up there." Leena inclines her head toward the window.
Artie peers in to see her sprawled out in his desk chair (his chair!!), apparently half-asleep. "She's got work to do! She--"
"Artie, Artie!" hisses Leena insistently. "Artie, she's taking a break. She's been working very hard."
Artie grumbles something unintelligible under his breath and settles heavily into the chair opposite Leena. She's leaning on the arm of her own chair, looking at him with wistful puppy-eyes. "I hate that look," he says sourly. "Here it comes..."
"Claudia needs a home--"
"This is not the Humane Society--"
"She's not a stray cat--"
"She's not staying here, Mrs. Frederick's getting antsy as it is--"
"I'm not suggesting she stay here. Artie, you can pull strings. MIT, Cal Tech--"
Artie just grunts.
"She needs a challenge! Artie, she needs people."
"She's got Joshua!" Artie protests.
"And Joshua's on his own path. Yes, they're both brilliant, but he's--he's a researcher and she's a doer. She needs people like her."
Artie huffs a faint, bitter laugh. "Brash? Rude? Anti-social? Impulsive?"
Leena gives him her best 'bitch, plz' look. "We're discussing Claudia. Not you."
"See, that's kind of a low blow..."
